The main setting is a farm named after Picapau Amarelo (Yellow Woodpecker), hence the series' title. It's home to Dona Benta, an elderly woman in her sixties who lives with her granddaughter Lúcia, or Narizinho as everyone calls her, and her maid, Aunt Nastácia. Narizinho's inseparable friend is an old rag doll named Emília, made by Aunt Nastácia. In one of the chapters of Reinações de Narizinho, Emília begins to speak thanks to the talking pill of Doctor Caramujo, a renowned physician from the Kingdom of Clear Waters, a palace located at the bottom of the farm's stream. During school holidays, Pedrinho, Narizinho's cousin, spends a season of adventures at the farm. Together, they enjoy adventures exploring fantasy, discovery, and learning. On several occasions, they leave the farm to explore other worlds, such as Neverland, the mythological world of Ancient Greece, an underwater world known as the Kingdom of Clear Waters, and outer space.
